Welcome Message from President Kaler

OrientationWelcome to the new semester, I hope you've had a wonderful summer.

As the new school year begins, I urge you to take to heart some core values of our University. In these times nationally and locally, I believe we need to be perfectly clear about those values. First, at our University there is no place for hate. We do not tolerate bigotry. And, every day in every way, we denounce in the strongest terms the racist, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic messages of white supremacy.

At the same time, we respect the right to express different opinions. After all, this is an intellectual community. So, it is important for all of us to talk with each other, to listen carefully, and, yes, to debate, but always with respect for others opinions. Violence is never acceptable.

With that in mind, let me point you to an important series of events coming up. "Greater than 7" is a week devoted to diversity and campus climate issues. The days set aside — September 25-October 1 — are only seven days, but represent the beginning of a multitude of conversations we’re sure to have this semester and beyond about equity and diversity and related topics on our campus, and how they impact our lives.

Before then, let's all gather to celebrate the new academic year. Along with other University leaders, Tuesday, September 5, I'll be outside Coffman at the Goldy statue to welcome you back to campus. Please come join us from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Finally, please visit my website to learn how you can sign up for my office hours. I'd love to meet you. And please follow me — @PrezKaler — on Twitter.

Have a safe, successful, productive, and fun 2017-18 academic year. I’ll see you around campus!

Eric W. Kaler
